In celebration of Women in Horror Month I started thinking about all the amazing actresses throughout all sub-genres of horrors that have helped to redefine the look and feel of horror. The role of women in horror has really evolved to take on a life of it’s own and that debt can be owed to the actresses in the films. But, sadly not all actresses stay with the horror genre and although there are several actresses I would love to see further their careers in horror like, Eva Green (Dark Shadows), Ellen Page (Hard Candy) and Rosario Dawson (Planet Terror). I thought I would look at mainstream actresses, who have never tackled horror or who have only dipped their foot into the bloody pool of our genre.
I like many were first introduced to Rila as, Yukio the red haired katana wielding ally to Wolverine. She then moved onto the actual role of Katana on the CW’s ARROW (which I would love to see her further expanded). I think we can all agree that she has some amazing martial arts skills and can wield a mean katana, so this woman is all but written for horror and she would excel at it! Rila could take on many different horror roles, so I say set her in a post-apocalyptic setting or zombie infection, where her skills can really be highlighted. If they ever decide to remake 28 DAYS LATER, she would make a great Selena I could even see her as a character similar to Brooke from WYRMWOOD: Road of the Dead.
Although she had a slight moment in horror with the television remake of ROSEMARY’S BABY, Zoe has never fully come over to the horror side. Which is sad since she is an incredible actress with an emotional range for days. Her character strengths come within which means she would fair well in a home invasion, YOU’RE NEXT style type of film or a couple on vacation, who come against either a supernatural force or a knife wielding maniac.
She almost stole HANNIBAL’s thunder in NBC’s Hannibal with her portrayal of morally questionable Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier. As Hannibal’s psychiatrist, Gillian proved she can handle a profound level of madness with posie and confidence. Her turn as Dana Scully in THE X-FILES, also helped to equip her with dealings in the supernatural world. With madness and supernatural covered, her acting prowess is all but screaming for a horror movie. Given her range there are differing degrees of characters she would fit well into, like a Radha Mitchell’s Detective Burquez styled character in EVIDENCE or even a female lead subject matter of WE ARE WHAT WE ARE.
Much like Zoe, Emily has dabbled in the horror genre with her turn in THE WOLFMAN, but she is more known for her take charge style roles like in EDGE OF TOMORROW and SICARIO. But, Blunt’s mannerisms and overall presence warrants inclusion into the horror realm. She would fair well in a survivalist styled film, with either a viral or alien outbreak as well as creature feature set in an isolated area. She would also fit well into a film in the similar vein of EDEN LAKE or KRISTY, where it’s survival against a group of menacing individuals.
There’s an abundance of male slashers, but what about female slashers? I think Gwendoline could help usher in a new wave of female slasher flicks, plus at 6’3 she has a great look for a slasher franchise. Her back story choices are limitless including the standard hints of a tortured childhood much like Leatherface from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE or Victor Crowley from HATCHET, but you would want to add a new level of tragedy that would breed anger and hatred through her. Much like her male counterparts, Gwendoline’s female slasher would have a signature kill and weapon to help her set her apart from the crowd and help her make her own stake in the horror genre.
She blew onto the Hollywood scene in 12 YEARS A SLAVE with her Oscar nominated performance as Patsey. She then moved into the world of geek as Maz Kanata in STAR WARS: The Force Awakens. Having done so much in a short amount of time, Lupita would really benefit in the world of horror. Although I think she would do well, much like Emily and Rila in a post-apocalyptic like MAD MAX or an I AM LEGEND setting. She would also shine in supernatural subject matter like THE SIXTH SENSE or even the subject of a documentary like THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN.
Although I haven’t watched GAME OF THRONES, one can not ignore the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen, which help leads itself as a great catalyst to the world of horror. Emilia has a great presence that would be served well in a survivalistic setting such as a film in the vein of WOLF CREEK, THE DESCENT or THE RUINS. I also see her in a vampire queen styled role, much like Aaliyah, Queen Akasha from QUEEN OF THE DAMNED.
